Seen and Heard: Big Brother Edition

Heard

Me: Oliver! Stop that! What are you doing?

Oliver (sheepishly): I kiss a sister.

Caroline's face was shiny with the aquaphor I had just applied to Oliver's face, which I figure transferred to her race when he kissed her. I can only assume he was trying to rub it in or wipe it off. Either way I didn't have the heart to scold him further.

Seen and Heard (on several different occasions)

Oliver standing over a crying Caroline and sometimes getting right in her face. He comforts her with "Don't worry baby" or "Poor baby" or "What's a matter kiddo? It's okay kiddo." or "Hello baby sister/Caroline/cousin." (Not sure why he calls her cousin) or "Oviler hold her."

It means, put Caroline in the swing and hold me now. He's a typical two year old, but also a sweet big brother and we love it!

 

Seen and Heard: Silly Son Edition

Oliver galloping around the house daily, braying like a donkey, "Hee haw, hee haw."

Seen

Oliver taking a tube of lotion from the living room, booking it to one of the bedrooms and slamming the door, while I was busy feeding Caroline.

Oliver sitting in the dark hallway with his back to me. A closer look revealed a black sharpie in one hand and lots of "tattoos" on the other. His response on being discovered was a look and tone of total innocence and dismay, "Oh no, a black hand."

 

Heard

Oliver to me: "What's Ricky Fielding doing?" (He was talking on the phone. Oliver likes to ask questions with obvious answers. And recently, he likes to call us by our names.)

Oliver this morning: "Hello Kimberly, Kimberly, Kimberly."

Me: "I'm mommy to you, mister."

Oliver: "No. Kimberly, Kimberly, Kimberly."

How does he even know that's my name?! No one calls me Kimberly. Not even my mother. And how is he able to pronounce it so well, when his own name, which I'm sure he has heard thousands of times in his life, comes out as Oviler?

 

I did a bad bad thing

I've been slowly crossing things off my "to-do before the baby comes" list.  Yesterday I crossed off "get my hair done" and am regretting it.  If I were super vain, I would be crying about it.  But who has time to cry about the worst haircut of her life, when there are still a million things to cross off the list. 

Sorry there are no pictures:

a) because Typepad has not let me upload pictures for months, hence the lack of blogging.  If I had time and motivation to learn a new system I'd switch to Blogger ASAP.

b) because who wants to have the worst haircut of their life memorialized and spread on the internets.  (I am not exaggerating about it being the worst, I've had some pretty bad hair cuts but this one takes the cake.  I really need something wash and wear.  This is more like wash and put a bag over your head.)

If you are dying of curiosity just imagine a mushroom.  The cap is my head and the stem is my neck.  It is going to be a long and ugly 6 months trying to grow out this mess.  Luckily, I'll be too tired and dazed to care.

Household Hints and Handy Tips - Laundry Edition

Tip # 1

Always, always, always take the time to check pockets before throwing anything in the wash.  I am a lazy laundress and never do this, but am going to start.  In the last week alone I've found a tube of chapstick and 2 tubes of watercolor paint in my dryer!  Imagine my panic on taking almost half of Oliver's wardrobe out of the dryer to find the barrel encrusted with crimson streaks.  Thank goodness the blue tube of paint stayed sealed!

Tip #2

Always have some OxiClean and Shout spray on hand, even if you don't use either on a regular basis.

If you didn't take a minute to follow tip #1, don't despair.  After 10 minutes of going over every single article of spotted clothing with a bottle of Shout-- an hour long soak in a warm Oxiclean bath-- and two full cycles through the washing machine-- Almost every darn spot will disappear.  Oxi Clean is magical!  

I can't verify this method will work on other substances or types of paint, and I don't intend to find out! 

Tip #3 

To remove crusty watercolor paint from your dryer barrel, send a small load of wet rags through a drying cycle.  The barrel will be spotless.

Tip #4 

If you have an ankle biter or  toddler living with you, store anything you value or would not want going through the wash so far out of reach that it will never again see the light of day.  This ensures that in a moment of distraction or laziness you don't leave paints and whatnots laying out for little hands to hide in pockets.

Daddy Babe

A few mornings ago while sending Ricky off to work, Oliver started saying, "Bye bye Babe.  Bye bye Babe.  Bye bye Daddy Babe."  Ricky has been Daddy Babe or Babe ever since.  Since Ricky is Daddy Babe, Oliver now refers to me as Mommy Kim or Kim.   

Ricky likes to ask Oliver what we should name the new baby.  Oliver's usual reply is,"How 'bout Cara? or How 'bout mommy?"  Yesterday, I asked Oliver what we should name the baby and he suggested, "Daddy Babe." 

We have a silly son, and love him so much.

Chili Cook-Off

Ricky got roped into entering Shelley's (ID) 7th annual chili cook-off on Black Friday.  He's never made a traditional chili, so he entered his fejoiada (Brazilian black bean stew).  There were four categories:  Sweetest (yuck), Spiciest, Most Unique, and Best Overall. 

I am proud to report, Ricky won the Most Unique category! 

 

He's So Into Miso

Rickstar and I occasionally like to have dinner at Miso Sushi, our local sushi place. We never take our picky little eater with us. But last night, we were in the mood for some sushi food and hoped that Oliver would be good.

We ordered him the kids chicken cutlet, which came with a bowl of miso soup. He loved it! The kid won't eat watermelon, peaches, grapes, lettuce, carrots, green beans, cucumbers, etc. But, he scarfed down the soup, including the tofu and SEAWEED. I had no idea he would actually eat anything green.

Dinner sounded something like this, "Slurp...mmmm....soup....slurp....mmmmmm....soup.......slurp.....mmmmmm......soup" He doesn't even "mmmmmm" for macaroni and cheese! I guess he's a little asian boy at heart and it would seem that I need to learn how to make miso soup.

Scenes from the week: Fun and Free

 

Albertsons had an egg hunt for the little ones.  It was fun and free.  Oliver caught on that we wanted him fill his basket and quickly tried to fill it with apples and tomatoes.  We convinced him that what he really wanted were the candy-laden plastic eggs.

Playing in the garden sprinklers is great fun! 

 
Not so fun and free:

A gash in the forehead courtesy of a wooden bench.  $25 copay to have the forehead glued back together.   $4.99 for a bottle of NuSkin at the drugstore after Oliver peels off the doctor's handiwork.  Blegh!  I don't think I'm cut out for this motherhood thing.
